Well...I shop at thrift stores almost every weekend. I know it's a lot!!! But they have such great deals on super adorable clothing and accessories that I just can't resist! I've bought so many sweaters for a fraction of the price they're worth, and I found my every- day purse for $4! Let's face it. There's only two reasons why we don't shop at thrift store; our pride, and the cleanliness of the store. After finding a decent-awesome thrift store, there's absolutely no reason why you shouldn't go. It's like a treasure hunt. Except instead of gold, you're looking for outstanding outfits!
These are some tips that I picked up on from my endless hours shopping in these stores.
1) NEVER give up. You have been looking and looking for hours. You found nothing that was attractive, flattered your figure or fit. You are running purely on caffeine. You get so infuriated, that you leave the store empty-handed. Sound familiar? I've done this many times. Instead of focusing on your failure, focus on what you have achieved. Maybe you didn't find anything worth while, but you made a costumer laugh. Maybe you picked up a shoe for a toddler who took it off. Whatever happens, just remember that you didn't waste your time, and that you had a productive day. Which leads me to the second tip...
2) Stay Optimistic. This is a tough one for me. As soon as I hit the dressing room, my self esteem plummets. But recently, I have learned something very valuable. It is the clothes that don't fit. It isn't me who doesn't fit in the clothes. We all have very unique body shapes, and we can't really narrow them down to "Standard" sizes. So as soon as you try on that pair of size 6 jeans, and they're too tight, remember, the jeans are too small. You are not too large.
3) Make Sure You Have Plenty of Time to Shop. A trip to Target may take 45 minutes, but a thrift store takes WAY longer. Make sure you leave at least an 1 1/2 hours to shop, so you don't feel rushed.
4) Shop With a Second Opinion. Sometimes, mirrors can lie more than people. Bring a friend or family member with you to give you an honest opinion. Just make sure the person isn't the same size as you... you don't wanna be fighting over the cute clothing!
5) Don't Just Look for Size and Style, Look for Patterns! Maybe you'll find a super cute patterned top, but it is too small. No biggie. If the price is reasonable, you can cut and sew the shirt into a headband! There are so many DIY (do it yourself) clothing crafts on YouTube. You can check 'em out!
6) Buy For Your Friends! If you see an irresistible blouse that your bestie would die for, buy it! You can either give it to her as a gift, or just to show your admiration.
7) Don't Just Check In Your Size! Although you may say you're a size 2, check in the surrounding sizes, (0,4,6) who knows... maybe a certain company runs small/large!
8) Really Look. Make sure to pry through all the clothing and shoes. Maybe your dream shoe, navy blue, were under the worn pair of . You need to thoroughly check through a majority of the clothing. It will be worth it.
9) Try New Things! Maybe something doesn't particularly catch your eye. That doesn't mean you won't love having it in your wardrobe.
10) Compare Now, and in the Future. When I am torn between two purchases, I think "Which would I like the most now?" and "Which would I like the most when I'm older?" That way, I've been able to mostly avoid those "I liked it when I bought it." moments.
I hope you guys enjoyed my little advice on how to shop at a thrift store! I will attach some photos of the things I have bought and their prices.
